Born in the British Protectorate of Aden, in 1949 Margalit emigrated to Israel, where she became the prima ballerina of the Inbal Dance Theatre Company. She danced with Inbal for fifteen years. In 1965, Margalit joined the dance faculty at UCLA and founded her own company. She was appointed artistic director of Inbal in 1994 and began performing with her son’s company and with Batsheva. In 1999, Ohad Naharin invited her to appear alongside Niklas Ek and Anna Laguna in his work LOL. As a vocalist, Margalit has performed with Yo-Yo Ma and recorded an album for Folkways Records. She is the recipient of the Myrtle Wreath Award and a Creative Capital Grant and her choreography is the subject of the Ford Foundation documentary Gestures of Sand.
Holds a B.A. in dance from Sarah Lawrence College. She has been lighting works in New York City and around the country since 2006. Her lighting design has been seen at The Chocolate Factory, New York Live Arts, HERE Arts Center, and the Neo-Futurarium. She recently lit the premiere of Rebuilding Sandcastles for Loni Landon at The Joyce Theater, the Vail International Dance Festival premiere of Larry Keigwin’s Canvas, and TAKE Dance Company’s 2014 New York Season at Symphony Space. This spring she will be lighting the premiere of American Repertory Ballet’s Firebird at the McCarter Theatre Center. Lauren is also the Lighting Designer for DanceNOW’s presentations at Joe’s Pub.
